Keep Safe with These Top Garage Door Safety Tips!

August 29, 2019

You may not think twice about the safety of your garage door, but the reality is that garage doors injure thousands of people every year. If you aren’t practicing garage door safety or getting adequate garage door repair in Nampa, ID, you or a member of your family could get seriously hurt!

Thankfully, it’s really easy to implement garage door safety within your household. Check out these safety tips and make sure your entire family is up to speed:

  • The garage door isn’t a toy: If you have children, the first thing you should teach them about the garage is that the garage door is not a toy. It should never be used as something to climb, to race into or to operate for fun. Many children get injured by treating the garage door as a plaything.
  • Keep clear at all times: You and everyone in your household should stay away from the garage door while it is opening or closing. You should never operate the garage door while someone is standing underneath or too close to it, since fingers or limbs can easily be pinched and the force of the door can cause injury.
  • Store remotes out of reach: Children who have access to the garage door remotes may think it’s fun to open and close it repeatedly, so keep the remotes in a safe location out of their reach. Also, make sure to hide them in your car or remove them after driving so they are not able to be stolen by thieves.
  • Ensure safety sensor functionality: Every garage door should have safety sensors on both sides of the garage door rails, just a few inches off the ground. These sensors create an invisible beam that senses when something is under the garage door. When this beam is interrupted, the garage door should stop and reverse to prevent it from closing on someone or a pet. If this system is broken or not installed, have it fixed or installed right away.
  • Test the auto reverse: As with the safety sensors, your garage door should also have an auto reverse feature that forces the door to reverse if it touches an object while closing. Place a roll of paper towels or a similar object below an open garage door, then close it to ensure the auto reverse function operates properly as soon as it touches the paper towel roll. If it doesn’t, have it fixed right away.
  • Do routine inspections: You should do an inspection of all aspects of your garage door once a month. Check that all the nuts, bolts, screws, springs, belts and more are in good working order, and tighten or replace anything that is broken or worn out.
  • Get repairs done ASAP: If your garage door or opener system has been damaged in any way, don’t delay in getting garage door repair in Nampa, ID. Operating a broken garage door can lead to serious injury, especially if the safety sensors or opener system are not working as they should.
